Diary entry #59

I am the madhatter!

These treasures, these hats found in the cargo bay, are deemed worthless by my fellow survivors, and I have to admit that they are somewhat hideous in their extravagance: Full of plumage and without purpose other than to adorn wealthy women who want to attend swanky Southern events. With that said, I would like to present one of these hats to my mother should I survive to arrive in Atlanta.

The hats come in various colors. Some all of one (pink, lime, or light blue), while others are multi-colored—bright red and shocking blue. The themes they have in common are a crafty brim, sometimes irregular—oval, circular and dipping, or oddly configured—as though a large mouth has taken a bite from the brim.

Each also has a healthy dose of feathers. The most pronounced feathers are long and full, as though they’ve grown naturally from the hat itself. Small fluffy feathers of matching or contrasting colors decorate these spectacles of lavishness.

Many of these hats are obvious pieces of apparel, but others look like species I used to seek on bird-watching adventures. Or peacocks settling in for a long night.

Now who would put that on her head? Who would not?
